1500m National record holder

JEFFREY ONG

I'm Jeffrey Ong

Jeffrey Ong comes from a family of swimmers. His two sisters Katerina and Angelia were national swimmers, with Katerina crowned National Sportswoman of the Year in 1980.
Born in 1972 in Penang, Jeffrey and his three siblings started swimming at the Chinese Swimming Club in Penang when they were just kids. Jeffrey specialised in two events - 400 metres Freestyle and the 1500 metres.
At 14, he made his international debut at the 1987 Jakarta SEA Games winning both the 400m and 1500m Freestyle. It was the first time a Malaysian male swimmer had won the Gold in the SEA Games. For his winning effort, Jeffrey was voted MOST PROMISING MALAYSIAN SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR.

In 1988, he was voted National Sportsman of the Year.

That same year Nurul Huda Abdullah won the National Sportswoman award.

"Literally in the span of 12
months I’d gone to the SEA Games, ASIAN
Swimming Championships and the Olympics."

After his sterling performance at the Asian Swimming Championships in Guangzhou, Jeffrey competed in his first ever Olympics - the 1988 Seoul Olympics. And later, the 1989 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.
In 1990, Jeffrey won the Silver in the 1500 metres at the Beijing Asian Games, making him the first Malaysian to win a medal in the event.
1991 was an historic year for Jeffrey. He won the Silver in the 1500 metres at the World Student Games in Sheffield, England.

Jeffrey set a new Malaysian record,
an Asian record and also became the
14th fastest swimmer in the event in
the world.

At the 1993 Singapore SEA Games, Jeffrey set a new Malaysian record in the 400 metres Individual Medley.
In all, Jeffrey Ong has won 15 international medals - 9 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze and his 1500 metres national record still stands 30 years later. He also swam in two Olympics - 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona. In 2012, he was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia's Hall of Fame.

"...if we all believe in ourselves and put our minds on things that we want to do, we can actually achieve so much."
