DAUD IBRAHIM

I'm Daud Ibrahim

As if dictated by providence, a young boy finds the rusty frame of a broken bicycle buried under his house, one day. Little did Daud Ibrahim know that it would lead him to becoming one of Malaysia's best cyclists in the 1970s.
Daud Ibrahim was born in 1947 in Batu Pahat, Johor, the middle child of six children. Daud's father died when he was still a boy. To help the family make ends meet, he tapped rubber and did odd jobs while still schooling. But the young lad was so keen on his new find, that he got the bicycle repaired and  painted, and began using it to cycle to school and racing with friends.

"...cara menoreh getah sajalah
dia dapat income untuk pergi berlumba."

-  Firdaus Daud  -
(son)
After winning local races, he worked hard to earn extra money to race outside of Batu Pahat.
Daud Ibrahim made his international debut at the 1969 Rangoon SEAP Games but together with the other national cyclists, came home empty handed.
After national cycling got a hiding from national sports officials and the press on the dismal performance in Rangoon, Daud Ibrahim, Ng Joo Ngan and the others in the team were determined to change their fate.
They did it in 1970 at the Bangkok Asian Games. Daud himself, although making his first appearance at the Games, won the Gold in the 1600m Mass Start and the Bronze in the 1km Time Trial.

In 1971, Daud Ibrahim was voted National Sportsman of the Year.

It was a fitting back-to-back finish for national cycling as Datuk Ng Joo Ngan had won it the year before.
Daud also represented Malaysia in the 1972 Munich Olympics. And in 1974, his first and only Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand.
After his retirement Daud continued to contribute to national cycling by coaching state and national teams. Five of his children also became state and national cyclists.

In 2001, Daud was given the honour of lighting the cauldron at the 2001 KL SEA Games.

Sadly, in 2010, Daud Ibrahim passed away in a road accident at age 63. But his legacy remains through his children and the dozens of cyclists he groomed and inspired over the decades. Daud Ibrahim is still remembered and revered in Johor as one of the best national cyclists Malaysia produced in that era.
