National and State Captain

NAMAT ABDULLAH

I'm Namat Abdullah

Datuk Namat Abdullah is a Malaysian football icon. The former national and Penang state captain, was part of the only Malaysian team that qualified and played in an Olympic finals.
Born in 1946 in Penang, Namat was the eldest of nine children. His father and his younger brother Shahruddin were also footballers. Namat and Shahruddin began playing serious football for the Royal Airforce team and later for Marine Harbour Master in Penang. By then Namat's footballing skills were being noticed and together with Shahruddin was selected to play for the Penang Burnley Cup team which became champions in 1969. That same year the brothers were selected for the Penang senior side and soon got a national call-up for the Merdeka Tournament.

Namat was also a member of one of the best club teams at that time - Malaysian Prisons.

The highlight of Namat's football career, was helping Malaysia book a place in the 1972 Olympic finals in Munich.

A spirited Malaysia shocked Japan, South Korea, China and the Philippines to top the pre-Olympic group stage. And in the opening match at the Munich Olympic Stadium, Namat and the formidable Malaysian defence held mighty West Germany to a scoreless first half before going down 3-0. Malaysia then beat USA and lost to Morocco. But what an achievement for a young, newly-independent nation.

In 1974, Namat led Malaysia to third place in the Asian Games, and then Penang to the Malaysia Cup Championship.

Penang beat Perak 2-1 in the final to become Malaysia Cup Champions after 16 years.
And in 1976, as captain, Namat led Penang to win the Aga Khan Gold Cup in Bangladesh.
Sadly, in December 2020, Datuk Namat Abdullah passed away. But his achievements and that of the teams that he played for and skippered, will go down in history as some of the best football teams Malaysia ever produced.
