SYLVIA NG

I'm Sylvia Ng

From young, Sylvia Ng Meow Eng had all the makings of a badminton champion. Her father Ng Ngoh Tee and eldest brother Roland had played for their home state of Johor and an older brother Billy was a member of the 1967 Thomas Cup-winning team. It only seemed natural that Sylvia would take up badminton. Interestingly, it was not her first choice.
Born in 1949 in Johor Bahru, Sylvia Ng was the tenth of 11 children. One could say her family had badminton “flowing through their veins”. When she was in primary school, Sylvia was a sports all-rounder, with athletics being her favourite.

"You got to think of something, one sport at least. Concentrate on one sport"

-  Ng Ngoh Tee  -
(Sylvia's father)
Sylvia's father urged her to concentrate on one sport and suggested badminton. And he became her personal coach. She was so good in the game that Roland would make her play against boys. Much to their embarrassment the boys would lose to her.
In 1967 at the age of 18, Sylvia entered her first SEAP Games in Bangkok. It turned out to be a disaster. She slipped on the court during a warm-up session and fractured her foot. A distraught Sylvia feared it would be the end of her badminton career.
She made a remarkable comeback at the 1969 Rangoon SEAP Games winning the gold in the singles and the silver in the doubles.

"That was my first gold for Malaysia"

From then on, it was just title after title in various international tournaments, including being national champion six consecutive times.

Sylvia's crowning glory was winning the singles title at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, in Edmonton, Canada.

History was made on August 12, 1978, Sylvia became the first Asian to win the singles gold in the Commenwealth Games and the only Malaysian woman to do so till today.
She was also the nation’s flag-bearer for the Edmonton Games Opening Ceremony.

"I was really really proud holding the Malaysian flag...

She was voted National Sportswoman of the Year twice - in 1975 and 1978.

Again no Malaysian woman badminton player has done that.

Even after retirement from active badminton, Sylvia continued to represent Malaysia, taking part in a number of torch relays, including lighting the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of the 1989 KL SEA Games.
In 1998, while representing the nation in the Queen's Relay, Sylvia had the honour of meeting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.
In 1982, she was conferred the A.M.N. (Ahli Mangku Negara) by the Yang di-Pertuan Agung. Sylvia was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Hall of Fame in 2004.
From a 10-year old child who just loved sports, Sylvia Ng is now a Malaysian badminton icon and a shining example of what a winning mindset can achieve.

"I'm really proud of myself. And proud of what I've done for the country."
